Our Safe Home in Raqqa: A Lifeline for Women, Girls, and Children in Crisis

Project Duration: 2020 - Ongoing
Project Location: Ar-Raqqa, Syria

Since 2020, in the heart of Raqqa—a city scarred by war but not without hope—DOZ Syria, with the support of Un Ponte Per (UPP) and generous contributions from international donors including AICs, USAID-BHA, and others, has been operating a sanctuary of healing and empowerment for women, girls, and children affected by conflict and displacement.

🌿 Project Name: Darna Al-Aminah – Our Safe Home

In Arabic, Darna Al-Aminah means Our Safe Home—a name that embodies safety, dignity, and recovery. This project provides life-saving protection and psychosocial support for women and children, especially survivors of gender-based violence (GBV), early marriage, neglect, and abuse. It is more than a shelter; it is a space for transformation and empowerment.

🌼 Why This Project Matters

In post-conflict Raqqa, the trauma of war has left lasting scars—especially on women and girls. Many face early marriage, violence, and isolation, while children are robbed of safety and education. Darna Al-Aminah stands as a shield against these harms. It offers a path forward, filled with possibility, healing, and new beginnings.

💔 From Pain to Power: A Survivor’s Story

Among the many courageous stories that echo through our center, one stands out—a reminder of why we do this work.

At just 12 years old, she was forced into marriage. She didn’t understand what was happening—only that she was suddenly someone's wife. The violence she endured from her husband was constant, and within a year, she was divorced. A child, carrying the burden of womanhood far too soon.

She came to Darna Al-Aminah, not expecting much. But through psychological support, early marriage awareness sessions, and life skills activities, she began to find her voice again. The DOZ team enrolled her in computer literacy classes, built her confidence, and helped her make friends.

“Now, I believe in myself. I want to continue my education. I want to choose my own future.” Her story is one of thousands. And it is why we continue.

📍 Project Highlights (2020–Present)

  • Safe spaces established for women, girls, and children
  • Hundreds of GBV survivors supported and empowered
  • Over 1,000 awareness sessions and outreach activities
  • Psychosocial, legal, and referral services offered year-round
  • Dozens of staff trained in survivor-centered case management
